New hybrid race car delivers eco boost without sacrificing speed
A team of 14 engineering students from Texas A&M University, supported by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), has developed an affordable hybrid race car prototype aimed at demonstrating that speed and sustainability can coexist in motorsports. The car features a unique “through-the-road” hybrid system combining an electric front-wheel drivetrain with a rear combustion engine, with no mechanical connection between the two axles. This design allows the car to maintain high performance while reducing carbon emissions, targeting amateur and pro-am racing leagues. Key innovations include regenerative braking, which recovers energy during braking to recharge the battery and boost the combustion engine, and a push-to-pass feature that provides short bursts of electric power to enhance acceleration. The team also prioritized safety with extensive hardware testing and software fail-safes. Their prototype earned second place out of 361 entries at Texas A&M’s 2025 Engineering Capstone Showcase. The SCCA plans to test the car on track by the end of 2025, with the

Volvo Philippines has introduced two new plug-in hybrid SUVs, the XC60 PHEV and the XC90 PHEV, aligning with its “Being Alive” campaign focused on road safety and sustainability. The XC60, a global best-seller since 2017 with over 1.5 million units sold, offers up to 80 kilometers of pure electric range and features a 2.0L 4-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric rear motor for an e-AWD system. It combines Scandinavian design elements such as “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights, wood and aluminum interior accents, and advanced safety technologies including Pilot Assist, collision avoidance, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), and a 360° camera. The flagship XC90 PHEV, made in Sweden, provides up to 77 kilometers of electric range and similarly uses a 2.0L petrol engine for extended driving. Its interior emphasizes comfort and safety with Napa leather seating, genuine wood décor, and an

Ford experienced a significant 31% decline in U.S. electric vehicle (EV) sales in the first half of 2025, driven primarily by a sharp drop in E-Transit van sales and waning demand for the F-150 Lightning. Specifically, Ford sold just 38,988 EVs by mid-year, marking a nearly 12% decrease compared to the same period in 2024. The Mustang Mach-E also saw a nearly 20% year-over-year sales decline in the second quarter, while F-150 Lightning sales fell by 26%. The E-Transit van sales plunged from 3,410 units in Q2 2024 to only 418 in Q2 2025, attributed to larger fleet orders occurring earlier in the year. Despite these EV setbacks, Ford's overall sales increased, partly due to automotive tariffs that initially boosted demand as buyers anticipated price hikes. Conversely, Ford's hybrid vehicle sales surged by more than 23% compared to the previous

Bugatti has unveiled the Tourbillon, a new hybrid hypercar that succeeds the Chiron and features a groundbreaking 8.3-liter naturally aspirated V16 engine developed in collaboration with Cosworth. This engine produces 1,800 horsepower and revs up to 9,000 rpm, marking a departure from the quad-turbocharged W16 engines used in previous models. The Tourbillon’s powertrain integrates this V16 with a hybrid system co-developed with Rimac, combining the combustion engine with three electric motors—two on the front axle and one integrated into the rear transmission—that collectively add 800 horsepower for a total output of 1,800 hp. The hybrid system is designed to enhance performance by providing instant torque at low speeds, reducing lag, and enabling advanced features like torque vectoring through the high-revving rear electric motor. A 24.8-kWh, 800-volt T-shaped battery pack is embedded into the carbon composite monocoque chassis to
